Against the literal and figurative backdrop of a land plunged into darkness and civil war, against the ravages of a dark age indeed, the Saxon King Vortigern wars with Ambrosius, at the vanguard of the clans of the Britons. Merlin is brought before the Saxon warlord, but with a sight beyond sight, sees how these warring kings have disturbed the depths, the life in the Sacred Land: he sees the awakening of the Dragons of Old, the powers residing in the churning depths of the living rock. Vortigern, thus far, has tried in vain to build the first ramparts to his fortifications, for the earth quakes and refuses to allow the construction to stand.
Vortigern, bloodthirsty, irascible and impatient, is confounded. Merlin, with magical perception, understands that the dragons have been awoken, embroiled within the petty affairs of mortal men…
lyrics
And so the land came unto war;
In bloody death the earth was torn.
Each king warred for the rights to land
With broken oaths and murderous hands.
To fire and rape did the country fall;
A kingless realm for lord and thrall –
But Merlin saw the battle of kings
As the warring dragons of earth’s hills…
“Merlin, Merlin…”
In firelit woods the seers called
To a feathered cloak about a child.
Their Saxon lord watched like a hawk,
As he laid the first stones to his fort.
“The dragons shake the very earth!”
The seers chanted in the their mirth,
“We need his blood spilled on these stones,
And the dragons will stay their warring bones.”
Merlin of the Feathered Cloak
Was brought before the lord,
Vortigern of Saxon stock,
His dark, bloodthirsty horde
“You wear the cloak of feathers, boy -
You’re aware of what we seek?
Here I’d build my fort of forts,
And crush the low and meek!”
“The red dragon fights the white -
The Saxons and these isles -
And all will be put to right
With the blood of a bastard child?”
“Surely, you do not see
The earth here toils in war?
The great dragon will not rest
As all you seek is ruin!”
Thus, young Merlin rose and spoke;
Offered to right the stones -
"But it does not need my blood, my lord;
Not on this dragon’s throne.”
Before the astounded soldiers,
Through the long cold night,
Merlin wove the dragon force,
Calmed its warring might.

For anyone who loves progressive music, this band, and this album, is a must listen. The closest comparison for me is the band IQ. Robin Peachy's vocals are very similar to that of Peter Nicholls. The title track is the one that really put the hook in for me, especially around the 6+ min mark, where the whole thing shifts into a very jazz/prog groove and is just fantastic! Sacrifced in Vein is another standout track. An excellent album for longtime prog fans and curious newcomers. Techsceptre

This is the most beautiful symphonic progressive music I have heard since I first heard Yes' Magnification nearly 20 years ago. Robert Reed's orchestrations are magnificent, and are very much on par with Trevor Rabin's film scores as well as Larry Groupe's score for Magnification. I am a french horn player, and his soaring horn parts are some of the best I have ever heard.
For some reason I could not select Part1: Sacrifice as my favorite track. It is indeed my favorite. luckeydoug1
