Rufus

1.
Nightmare 02:25
Terrified, Rufus awoke with a start, And cursed the wounding veil of dark… Rufus: Pray, leave a candle by my bedside, this night – Oh, how I frighten, when I see no light… Devils, I saw! And places of blood! Help me, my servant, I feel not as I should… Keep a candle burning, in my chamber, this night – Never again do I wish to see those evil, morbid sights… Oh God-forsaken thunder!
2.
I – “Ghost” Rufus: Here you see me, spirit and all, Done to death for evermore; Yet all the time, I think of you, Plotting like children and taking your due – Henry, brother, this realm is old, And Tyrell was bold… Mark my words… Tonight, my voice flies on the wind – Try not to seek me, for you have sinned… So here I am, put here by your will – I dwell in the ether, but I may not kill; Sickness of the mind was my only grief; You must believe… As sure as you will die… Listen eagerly – I see your eyes As they gleam brightly In the wake of surprise! Never again Will you hear my voice, Just the feeling of a presence, Like the sunrise Through the trees… II – “Omens” Narrative: Rufus remained to their dying day, His spirit, avenging and cruel; He plagued them at night, And during the day, Through every hour of Henry’s rule; Henry fathered bastard children; His only son died sadly too young – The king himself died, out while hunting… Rufus’ tomb began to tumble… Rufus: Ashes to ashes, Dust to dust… Rufus, revenge is yours…

about

As it is the 21st December, the Pagan Winter Solstice, we wanted to release music with mystical, Pagan overtones, something suitably haunting for the Dark of the Year. The two tracks, ‘Nightmare’ and ‘Rufus Deceased’ were originally Valle Crucis songs, reworked from an original concept album focusing on the mysterious events surrounding the alleged murder of England’s last Pagan king, William Rufus. Rufus was killed by a fatally fired arrow on the day of the August Hunt, August 1st , 1100, on the very day when the Corn King was sacrificed at Harvest time to propitiate the Old Gods…No one ever found out who the killer was. So, on the Shortest Day, and the rebirth of the Old Sun, Leafblade commemorate the passing of a Pagan King, harvested, like the old woodland gods, to be born anew at the Winter Solstice…
As a last note, I would like to thank Brian Cummins, ex-Valle Crucis cohort, and a great inspiration behind many of the vocal nuances in the theatrical sections of Nightmare.
